“Stories are how we make sense of the world. They shape how we understand ourselves, our communities, and the systems around us.”

Hi! My name is Dana..
Nice to meet you! and I’m a student at Thompson Rivers University with a bachelors degree in graphic design and digital media. I’m most interested in photojournalism and entertainment journalism because I like telling stories visually and paying attention to the details that help capture a moment or a mood. I’m drawn to the way photos, film, and writing can work together to shape how a story is experienced, and I try to focus on clarity and honesty rather than overcomplicating things. Whether I’m behind a camera or writing, I’m usually thinking about how something feels as much as what’s happening, and how to present it in a way that’s engaging without losing meaning. For me, journalism is about noticing what’s already there and finding a way to share it thoughtfully. As for my project in this course I am looking at possibly exploring local community stories, personal stories or a spotlight on subculture.
Outside of school, I spend a lot of my time creating visual content and experimenting with filmmaking. I enjoy planning, filming, and editing videos, and I’m always thinking about how framing, pacing, and sound affect the way a story feels. I’ve also spent years creating and sharing content through online communities around The Sims 4 and other games which has helped me develop a strong sense of audience and storytelling structure. These creative projects have shaped how I approach journalism, especially in photo and entertainment reporting, where visuals play a central role. When I’m not working on an assignment or a creative project, I’m usually analyzing media, developing new ideas, or noticing small moments that could turn into a story. I also love photography, coffee and going on nature walks.
